Why China Education Decisions Can’t Be Separated from China’s Talent Ecosystem

Many people outside China don’t realise this:China’s education pathways are tightly connected to its professional and talent ecosystem.
With LinkedIn no longer active in China, platforms like Maimai (脉脉) https://maimai.cn/ have become the dominant professional network used by Chinese employers, professionals, and graduates.
Why does this matter for students from Singapore and Southeast Asia considering education in China?
Because when families evaluate overseas education today, they’re no longer asking only:“Which university?”but also:“What kind of career visibility and opportunities does this pathway create?”
When I look at education opportunities in China, including emerging regions like Hainan Free Trade Port, I study not just universities and scholarships, but also how graduates are visible to employers and industries inside China.
Understanding platforms like Maimai gives important signals about:
talent demand by region and industry
employer expectations
how graduates actually position themselves after studying in China
This perspective is becoming increasingly important when advising students and families across ASEAN who want real optionality, not just a degree.
If you’re exploring China education pathways for students, I’m happy to exchange notes.
